This procedure covers draining and refilling the power steering fluid in a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla with 1.8L I4 engine to maintain proper steering system operation and prevent component wear.

Warnings

Perform this service with engine cold to avoid burns from hot fluid and components
Use only Toyota ATF Dexron III or equivalent - incorrect fluid can damage seals and cause steering failure
ℹ️This is a fluid exchange service - if steering pump is noisy or system has leaks, further diagnosis is required

Wheel chocksEssential

Parts

  • Power steering fluid × 1 — Use OEM specification

Fluids

  • Toyota ATF Dexron III — 1 qt

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
  3. Ensure engine is completely cold
  4. Gather all tools and new fluid before beginning

Procedure

  1. 1
    Raise front of vehicle
Lift the front of the vehicle using a floor jack and support securely on jack stands. This allows the front wheels to turn freely for bleeding procedure. Ensure vehicle is stable before working underneath.
  2. 2
    Locate power steering reservoir
Open hood and locate the power steering fluid reservoir on the driver's side of the engine bay, near the firewall. The reservoir is a translucent plastic tank with a twist-off cap marked with a steering wheel symbol. Check current fluid level and condition.
  3. 3
    Remove old fluid from reservoir
Remove the reservoir cap. Using a turkey baster or fluid transfer pump, extract as much old fluid as possible from the reservoir. Place extracted fluid into drain pan. Continue until reservoir is as empty as possible without removing hoses.
  4. 4
    Refill reservoir with fresh fluid
Using a funnel, pour fresh Toyota ATF Dexron III into the reservoir until it reaches the MAX or FULL COLD line on the reservoir. Do not overfill. Approximately 0.5 quarts will fill the reservoir initially.
  5. 5
    Bleed system - initial cycle
With engine OFF, turn the steering wheel slowly from full lock left to full lock right 5-10 times. This circulates new fluid through the system. Check reservoir level frequently and add fluid as needed to keep it at MAX line. Fluid level will drop as system fills.
Do not hold steering wheel against stops for more than 5 seconds to avoid damaging pump
  6. 6
    Remove additional old fluid
After initial bleeding, the reservoir will contain a mixture of old and new fluid (old fluid from system has mixed with new). Use turkey baster to remove as much fluid as possible again, then refill to MAX line with fresh fluid. This second exchange significantly improves fluid renewal.
  7. 7
    Perform final bleeding cycle
Repeat the lock-to-lock steering procedure 10-15 times with engine still OFF. Turn steering wheel slowly and smoothly. Monitor reservoir and maintain proper level throughout. Look for air bubbles in reservoir - continue until bubbles stop appearing.
  8. 8
    Start engine and check operation
Start the engine and let it idle. Turn the steering wheel slowly from lock to lock 3-5 times while engine runs. Check for unusual noises, foaming in reservoir, or leaks at hoses and fittings. Fluid level will drop slightly when engine runs - top off to FULL HOT line.
If excessive foaming or whining noise occurs, stop engine and repeat bleeding procedure - air remains in system
  9. 9
Lower vehicle and perform final check
Turn off engine. Lower vehicle from jack stands and remove stands and chocks. Reinstall wheel lug nuts if removed and torque to specification in star pattern. Check reservoir one final time and adjust level to FULL COLD line.
    Torque spec
    Wheel Lug Nuts140 Nm (103 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure reservoir cap is installed securely with proper seal
  2. Verify no fluid spills remain on engine components or ground
  3. All tools and old fluid have been properly removed from work area

Verification

  • Check power steering reservoir fluid level is at FULL COLD line with engine off and cold
  • Start engine and verify smooth, quiet steering operation with no whining or groaning noises
  • Turn steering wheel lock to lock and confirm no leaks appear at reservoir, hoses, or pump
  • Verify fluid in reservoir is clean red/pink color without foam or bubbles after engine runs
  • Test drive vehicle and confirm normal steering feel and response
  • Recheck fluid level after test drive - top off if needed to FULL HOT line
