This procedure covers removal and replacement of the starter motor on a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla with the 1.8L I4 engine, accessed from underneath the vehicle.
Warnings
⚠️Disconnect battery negative terminal and wait 90 seconds before starting work to prevent electrical shock and accidental engagement
⚠Vehicle must be on level ground and properly supported on jack stands - never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack
⚠Allow engine to cool completely before beginning work - starter is located near exhaust components
ℹ️The upper starter mounting bolt is long and requires a socket extension to access from below

Parts
- Starter motor assembly × 1 — 28100-0T050 or equivalent OEM
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and apply parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Allow engine to cool completely if recently operated
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and secure cable away from battery post
- Wait at least 90 seconds after battery disconnect for airbag system capacitors to discharge
- Raise front of vehicle and secure on jack stands rated for vehicle weight
- Remove engine under cover if equipped (plastic splash shield)
Procedure
- 1Access starter locationPosition yourself under the vehicle with adequate lighting. The starter is located on the transmission bell housing, toward the passenger side of the engine block. Identify the starter motor, electrical connections, and two mounting bolts.
- 2Remove heat shield if equippedSome models have a heat shield protecting the starter from exhaust heat. If present, remove the heat shield mounting bolts and set the shield aside. Clean any debris from the area around the starter.Torque specHeat Shield Bolts10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
- 3Disconnect starter solenoid wireLocate the small connector on the starter solenoid (S terminal). Press the tab and pull to disconnect the push-on connector. Note wire routing for reinstallation.
- 4Remove B+ cable from solenoidUsing a 12mm socket, remove the nut securing the battery positive cable to the starter solenoid (B+ terminal). Carefully pull the cable terminal off the solenoid stud. Support the cable to prevent it from falling or contacting ground.⚠Ensure battery is disconnected - this cable carries full battery voltage when connectedTorque specStarter Solenoid Nut12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 5Remove lower starter mounting boltUsing a 14mm socket and ratchet, remove the lower starter mounting bolt. This bolt threads into the transmission bell housing. Keep bolt for reinstallation or comparison with new hardware.Torque specStarter Mounting Bolts50 Nm (37 lb-ft)
- 6Remove upper starter mounting boltThe upper mounting bolt is longer and more difficult to access. Using a 14mm socket with a long extension, reach up to the upper bolt. This bolt may require a universal joint or wobble extension to align properly. Remove the bolt completely.ℹ️Support the starter as you remove the final bolt - it weighs approximately 7-9 lbs and may dropTorque specStarter Mounting Bolts50 Nm (37 lb-ft)
- 7Remove starter motorWith both mounting bolts removed, carefully wiggle the starter forward to disengage the nose from the bell housing pilot hole. Tilt and maneuver the starter assembly to clear surrounding components and remove it from the vehicle. Inspect the mounting surface and pilot hole for damage or debris.
- 8Prepare new starter for installationCompare new starter to old unit to verify correct replacement. Check that mounting ear positions match and electrical terminal locations are identical. Apply a thin coat of anti-seize to the starter nose (pilot section) if desired, but keep anti-seize away from electrical connections.
- 9Install new starter motorCarefully maneuver the new starter into position, aligning the nose with the pilot hole in the bell housing. Ensure the starter is fully seated with mounting ears flush against the bell housing surface before installing bolts.
- 10Install upper mounting boltThread the upper (longer) mounting bolt by hand using the long extension. Once bolt is started and threading properly, tighten to specification using a torque wrench. Ensure bolt threads smoothly without cross-threading.Torque specStarter Mounting Bolts50 Nm (37 lb-ft)
- 11Install lower mounting boltThread the lower mounting bolt by hand, then tighten to specification using a torque wrench. Verify both mounting bolts are properly torqued and the starter is secure with no movement.Torque specStarter Mounting Bolts50 Nm (37 lb-ft)
- 12Reconnect B+ cable to solenoidPosition the battery positive cable terminal onto the solenoid B+ stud. Install the retaining nut and tighten to specification. Ensure connection is clean and tight with no corrosion at the terminal.Torque specStarter Solenoid Nut12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 13Reconnect solenoid signal wireReconnect the push-on connector to the S terminal on the starter solenoid. Ensure the connector clicks fully into place. Route wire to match original installation and secure any clips.
- 14Reinstall heat shield and under coverIf heat shield was removed, reinstall it now and tighten bolts to specification. Reinstall engine under cover or splash shield if equipped. Verify all fasteners are secure and no tools or parts were left in the work area.Torque specHeat Shield Bolts10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Lower vehicle from jack stands safely
- Reconnect battery negative terminal and torque to specification (13.0 Nm)
- Verify battery cable connection is tight and secure
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position (without starting) and verify all dashboard warning lights function normally
- Start the engine - starter should engage smoothly without grinding, clicking, or hesitation
- Listen for any unusual noises from starter area during cranking
- Verify engine starts promptly and starter disengages immediately when engine fires
- Perform at least 3 start cycles (cold start, warm start, and after sitting 10 minutes) to confirm reliable operation
- Check for any warning lights on dashboard after successful start
- Inspect under vehicle for any loose parts, tools, or fluid leaks before returning to service
