This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the Transmission Control Module (TCM) on a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla with 1.8L engine and automatic transmission.
Warnings
⚠The TCM contains sensitive electronic components. Handle carefully and avoid static discharge.
⚠Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and may require additional system initialization after repair.
ℹ️Some ATF may drain when disconnecting TCM connector. Have a drain pan ready.
⚠Ensure vehicle is securely supported on jack stands before working underneath.

Parts
- Transmission Control Module (TCM) × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Transmission fluid (if replacement required) × 1 — Toyota WS ATF
Fluids
- Toyota WS ATF — 1 qt
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Allow engine and transmission to cool completely if recently driven
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes before proceeding
- Raise front of vehicle with floor jack and support on jack stands at manufacturer-specified lift points
- Remove front engine under cover if equipped (multiple 10mm bolts and plastic clips)
Procedure
- 1Locate the TCMFrom underneath the vehicle, locate the TCM mounted on the driver's side of the transmission case, near the transmission pan. The TCM is a rectangular aluminum housing with a multi-pin electrical connector on top.
- 2Remove TCM electrical connectorLocate the large multi-pin connector on top of the TCM. Press the locking tab and carefully pull the connector straight up and away from the TCM. The connector may be tight; wiggle gently while pulling if necessary. Inspect connector for corrosion or damage.
- 3Remove TCM mounting boltsRemove the three 12mm mounting bolts securing the TCM to the transmission case. Support the TCM with one hand while removing the final bolt to prevent it from falling.Torque specMounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
- 4Remove TCM from transmissionCarefully pull the TCM straight away from the transmission case. There may be a small amount of ATF spillage from the TCM mounting area. Catch any fluid with a drain pan and shop towels. The TCM has an internal fluid passage connection that will separate as you pull it out.
- 5Inspect TCM mounting surfaceClean the TCM mounting surface on the transmission case with a clean shop towel. Inspect the O-ring sealing surface for damage or debris. Check for metal particles in any spilled fluid, which could indicate internal transmission damage.
- 6Prepare new TCMRemove new TCM from packaging. Verify the new TCM has an O-ring installed at the fluid passage connection point. If O-ring is separate, install it onto the TCM and lightly lubricate with clean ATF. Do not over-lubricate as excess fluid can attract contaminants.
- 7Install new TCMAlign the TCM with the mounting holes and fluid passage on the transmission case. Carefully push the TCM into position, ensuring the internal fluid passage connection seats properly. The TCM should sit flush against the transmission case.
- 8Install TCM mounting boltsInstall the three mounting bolts finger-tight first to ensure proper alignment. Then torque the bolts in a diagonal pattern to specification using a torque wrench.Torque specMounting Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect electrical connectorAlign the electrical connector with the TCM and press down firmly until the locking tab clicks into place. Verify the connector is fully seated by attempting to gently pull it upward - it should not move.
- 10Reinstall under cover and lower vehicleReinstall the front engine under cover if equipped, securing all bolts and clips. Carefully lower the vehicle from jack stands and remove jack stands. Lower vehicle completely to the ground.
- 11Reconnect battery and check fluid levelReconnect the negative battery terminal. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature. Check transmission fluid level per manufacturer procedure (engine running, transmission in Park, on level ground). Add Toyota WS ATF if necessary to bring to proper level.
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connections are secure and properly locked
- Verify no tools or parts were left in the engine bay or under the vehicle
- Wipe any spilled ATF from transmission case and surrounding components
- Reset any affected vehicle systems (clock, radio, power windows) after battery reconnection
Verification
- Start engine and verify no check engine light or transmission warning lights illuminate
- With foot on brake, shift through all gear positions (P-R-N-D) and verify smooth engagement
- Test drive vehicle and confirm smooth shifting through all gears under various loads
- Verify TCM programming is correct - some vehicles may require dealer programming or adaptation procedures
- Check for ATF leaks around TCM mounting area after test drive
- Use OBD-II scanner to verify no transmission-related diagnostic trouble codes are present
