This procedure performs a complete transmission fluid flush on the 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla 1.8L, replacing old ATF with fresh Toyota WS fluid to maintain transmission performance and longevity.
Warnings
⚠️Transmission fluid can be extremely hot (up to 200°F). Allow vehicle to cool for at least 2 hours before beginning work.
⚠Only use Toyota WS ATF. Using incorrect fluid will cause transmission damage and void warranty.
⚠Do not overfill transmission. Overfilling causes foaming, overheating, and potential seal damage.
ℹ️This vehicle uses a non-serviceable transmission filter on most model years. Confirm filter availability before attempting replacement.

Preparation

- 1Drain transmission fluid via drain plugLocate the transmission drain plug on the bottom of the transmission pan. Using a 19mm socket, carefully loosen the drain plug. Remove plug completely and allow fluid to drain into catch pan. Inspect old fluid for metal particles or burnt smell indicating internal damage. - 2Remove transmission pan boltsOnce fluid stops draining from drain plug, locate all transmission pan bolts around perimeter (typically 16-19 bolts). Using 10mm socket, loosen bolts in criss-cross pattern, working from center outward. Leave two bolts at opposite corners partially threaded to control pan lowering. Carefully break pan seal and lower pan, being aware residual fluid (1-2 quarts) will spill out.⚠Pan will contain additional fluid even after drain plug removal. - 3Inspect and clean transmission panRemove pan completely and empty remaining fluid. Inspect bottom of pan for metal shavings or debris - small amounts of fine particles are normal, but chunks indicate problems. Check magnet (if equipped) for excessive metal accumulation. Clean pan thoroughly with solvent and allow to dry. Remove all traces of old gasket material from pan mating surface using plastic scraper.
- 4Inspect and replace filter (if applicable)Check if your specific model year has a replaceable internal filter. If present, remove filter by pulling straight down or removing mounting bolts. Install new filter ensuring proper seating and o-ring alignment. Note that many 2014-2019 Corolla transmissions have a non-serviceable internal filter - if no accessible filter is visible, skip filter replacement.
- 5Clean transmission mating surfaceWith pan removed, carefully clean the transmission case mating surface where gasket seals. Use plastic scraper to remove all old gasket material without scratching aluminum surface. Wipe clean with lint-free shop towels. Inspect surface for damage, deep scratches, or warping that could prevent proper seal.
- 6Install new gasket and transmission panPosition new transmission pan gasket on pan (some gaskets use adhesive, others are reusable rubber). Carefully lift pan into position, aligning all bolt holes. Thread all pan bolts by hand first to ensure proper alignment. Using 10mm socket and torque wrench, tighten bolts to specification in criss-cross pattern starting from center and working outward.⚠Use criss-cross tightening pattern to prevent warping pan and causing leaks. - 8Add initial transmission fluidLocate transmission dipstick/fill tube (on driver side of engine bay). Using fluid transfer pump or funnel with long hose, add 4.5-5.0 quarts of fresh Toyota WS ATF through fill tube. This replaces the fluid that drained out. Do not overfill at this stage - you will check level after circulation.⚠Only use genuine Toyota WS ATF. Generic or universal ATF will damage the CVT or automatic transmission.
- 9Perform flush circulation cyclesLower vehicle to ground. Start engine and allow to idle. With parking brake engaged and foot on brake, shift through all gear positions (P-R-N-D-L) holding each for 5 seconds, then return to Park. Let engine idle for 3-5 minutes to circulate new fluid. Check underneath for leaks around pan and drain plug. Shut off engine and recheck fluid level.
- 10Check and adjust fluid levelWith engine at operating temperature (after 5 minute idle), engine running, on level ground, and transmission in Park, remove dipstick and wipe clean. Reinsert fully, remove again and check level. Fluid should be in HOT range on dipstick. Add fluid in 0.5 quart increments if low, rechecking after each addition. Do not overfill.⚠Transmission fluid level must be checked with engine running and transmission at operating temperature for accurate reading.
- 11Perform test drive and final verificationTest drive vehicle for 10-15 minutes, allowing transmission to shift through all gears under normal driving conditions. Monitor for smooth shifts, unusual noises, or slipping. Return to level surface, let engine idle for 2 minutes, then recheck fluid level with engine running. Adjust if necessary. Check again for any leaks around pan and drain plug.
Reassembly
- Reinstall front plastic undercover/splash shield if removed
- Torque all fasteners to specification using criss-cross patterns where indicated
- Dispose of old transmission fluid properly at recycling center - do not pour down drain
- Record mileage and date of service for maintenance tracking
Verification
- Check transmission fluid level is within HOT range on dipstick with engine running at operating temperature
- Verify no leaks present around transmission pan gasket or drain plug after test drive
- Confirm smooth shifting through all gears without slipping, harsh engagement, or delayed response
- Verify fluid color is bright red/pink - old fluid would be dark brown or burnt
- Test drive at various speeds to confirm transmission operates normally under load
