This procedure covers draining and refilling the automatic transmission fluid on a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla with 1.8L engine, ensuring proper fluid level and condition.

Warnings

Transmission fluid must be at operating temperature (140-175°F) for accurate level checking. Overfilling or underfilling can cause transmission damage.
Never start the engine with the transmission overfilled. This can cause foaming and transmission malfunction.
ℹ️This is a drain and fill procedure, not a complete flush. Approximately 4 quarts will drain; total capacity is 10 quarts. Multiple drain/fill cycles improve fluid renewal.
⚠️Transmission fluid can be extremely hot (200°F+). Allow vehicle to cool for at least 30 minutes before draining.

Parts

  • Transmission drain plug crush washer × 1 — 90430-12031 or equivalent

Fluids

  • Toyota WS ATF — 4 qt

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
  3. Allow engine and transmission to cool for at least 30 minutes if recently driven
  4. Gather all tools, new crush washer, and approximately 4 quarts of Toyota WS ATF
  5. Verify you have Toyota WS ATF specifically - DO NOT substitute with generic ATF

Procedure

  1. 1
    Raise and support vehicle
Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly while vehicle is on ground. Raise the front of the vehicle with a floor jack at the designated jacking points on the front subframe. Secure with jack stands under the frame rails behind the front wheels. Remove both front wheels for better access.
  2. 2
    Locate transmission drain plug
From underneath the vehicle, locate the transmission oil pan. The drain plug is a 14mm hex bolt on the bottom of the pan toward the front of the vehicle. Clean the area around the drain plug with a shop towel to prevent contamination.
  3. 3
Position drain pan and remove drain plug
Position a drain pan with at least 12 quart capacity directly under the transmission drain plug. Using a 14mm socket, slowly loosen and remove the drain plug. Allow fluid to drain completely - this will take 5-10 minutes. The fluid should be reddish-pink and not smell burnt; dark or burnt-smelling fluid indicates potential transmission issues.
  4. 4
    Inspect and replace crush washer
Once fluid has finished draining, remove the old aluminum crush washer from the drain plug. Inspect the drain plug threads for damage. Install a new crush washer onto the drain plug. Wipe the drain plug sealing surface on the transmission pan with a clean shop towel.
  5. 5
    Reinstall drain plug
Thread the drain plug with new crush washer into the transmission pan by hand to avoid cross-threading. Torque the drain plug to specification using a torque wrench.

  6. 6
    Reinstall wheels
Reinstall both front wheels. Thread lug nuts by hand first, then tighten in a star pattern. Raise vehicle slightly, remove jack stands, and lower vehicle to ground.
  7. 7
    Torque lug nuts to specification
With vehicle on ground and full weight on wheels, torque all lug nuts to specification in a star pattern using a torque wrench.

    Wheel Lug Nuts140 Nm (103 lb-ft)
  8. 8
    Access transmission fill port
Open the hood. Locate the transmission dipstick tube near the firewall on the passenger side of the engine bay. Remove the dipstick completely. This is both the fill point and level check point.
  9. 9
    Add transmission fluid
Using a long-neck funnel inserted into the dipstick tube, add 4 quarts of Toyota WS ATF slowly. Pour carefully to avoid spills and overfilling. After adding fluid, reinsert dipstick fully.
  10. 10
    Warm transmission and check level
Start the engine and allow to idle. With foot on brake, shift through all gear positions (P-R-N-D-L) pausing 3 seconds in each position. Return to Park. Allow engine to idle for 5 minutes to bring transmission to operating temperature (140-175°F). With engine running at idle and transmission in Park, remove dipstick, wipe clean, reinsert fully, then remove and check level. Fluid should be between the HOT range marks. Add fluid in small increments (0.25 qt) if needed.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure drain plug is torqued to specification with new crush washer installed
  2. Verify transmission fluid level is in the HOT range on dipstick with engine at operating temperature
  3. Confirm no leaks around drain plug after running engine
  4. Properly dispose of used ATF at recycling facility - do not pour down drains

Verification

  • Check transmission dipstick with engine running at operating temperature - level should be in HOT range
  • Inspect under vehicle for any fluid leaks around transmission drain plug
  • Test drive vehicle and verify smooth shifting through all gears with no slipping or harsh engagement
  • Recheck fluid level after test drive while engine is hot and idling
  • Fluid color should be bright red/pink, not dark or burnt-smelling
