Turn Signal Bulb - Rear

This procedure replaces the rear turn signal bulb in a 2014-2019 Toyota Corolla by accessing the bulb socket from inside the trunk.

• Rear turn signal bulb (7440 amber) × 1 — 7440A or equivalent amber bulb

Preparation

1. Open the trunk and locate the access panel on the side where the bulb needs replacement
2. Ensure the vehicle is off and the light switch is in the off position

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove trunk liner access panel
   Locate the fabric or carpeted trunk liner panel directly behind the tail light assembly on the affected side. Pull back or remove the access panel by gently releasing any clips or fasteners. Some models have a small removable panel secured with clips that can be pried carefully with a flat-head screwdriver or pulled by hand.

   Access the bulb socket
   Behind the tail light assembly, identify the turn signal bulb socket. The turn signal socket is typically located in the upper or outer position of the light assembly. The socket has a wiring harness connector attached to it.

   Remove the bulb socket
   Grasp the bulb socket firmly and rotate it counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn (about 90 degrees) until it releases from the tail light housing. Pull the socket straight out from the housing. Do not pull on the wiring harness.

   Remove the old bulb
   The 7440 bulb is a wedge-type bulb. Grasp the bulb firmly and pull it straight out of the socket. It should release without rotation. If the bulb is broken, use a cloth to protect your hand while removing fragments.

   Install the new bulb
   Using a clean cloth or while wearing gloves, insert the new 7440 amber bulb straight into the socket until it is fully seated. The bulb should fit snugly with the contacts making firm connection. Ensure the bulb is pushed all the way in.

   Reinstall the bulb socket
   Insert the bulb socket back into the tail light housing, aligning the tabs on the socket with the slots in the housing. Push the socket in and rotate it clockwise approximately 1/4 turn until it locks into place. Gently tug on the socket to confirm it is secured.

   Reinstall trunk liner access panel
   Replace the trunk liner access panel by pressing any clips back into position or reattaching fasteners. Ensure the panel is secured properly and sits flush with the surrounding trunk liner.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all trunk liner panels are properly secured and clips are fully engaged
2. Close the trunk fully

Verification

• Turn the ignition to the ON position without starting the engine
• Activate the turn signal on the repaired side and verify the indicator flashes at normal speed on the dashboard
• Walk to the rear of the vehicle and confirm the turn signal lamp is illuminating amber and flashing properly
• Test the hazard lights to verify both rear turn signals flash together
• Check that the bulb is not flickering or loose during operation
