Parts

  • Wiper linkage assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Cowl panel clips × 1 — Replace any broken clips

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition off and remove key
  3. Move wiper arms to vertical parked position
  4. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes for airbag system discharge
  5. Mark wiper arm positions on windshield with masking tape for reference

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove wiper arms
Lift the wiper arm cap at the base of each wiper arm. Using a 14mm socket, remove the wiper arm retaining nuts. Carefully rock the wiper arms while pulling away from the windshield to release them from the pivot shafts. Remove both wiper arms completely.
  2. 2
    Remove cowl top cover
Open the hood. Locate and remove the plastic clips securing the cowl top cover (the plastic trim panel below the windshield). There are approximately 8-10 clips along the cowl. Use a trim removal tool or flat-blade screwdriver to carefully pry up each clip. Once all clips are released, lift the cowl cover up and away from the vehicle.
  3. 3
    Remove cowl side covers
Remove the cowl side covers on both driver and passenger sides. These are secured by plastic clips and may have one or two screws on each side. Remove the fasteners and lift the side covers away to access the wiper motor and linkage assembly.

    Cover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Disconnect wiper motor electrical connector
Locate the wiper motor electrical connector on the driver side of the linkage assembly. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight off the wiper motor. Move the wiring harness aside to prevent damage during removal.
  5. 5
    Disconnect ground cable
Locate the ground cable bolt near the wiper motor mounting area. Using a 10mm socket, remove the ground bolt and disconnect the ground cable. Secure the cable away from the work area.
    Torque spec
    Ground Bolt13 Nm (10 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Remove wiper motor mounting bolts
Using a 10mm socket, remove the three wiper motor mounting bolts that secure the motor to the linkage assembly. Do not fully separate the motor from the linkage at this time.
    Torque spec
    Motor Mounting Bolts10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
  7. 7
    Remove linkage pivot nuts
Locate the pivot nuts where the linkage arms connect to the body at both driver and passenger sides. Using a 12mm socket, remove the pivot nuts from both sides. Support the linkage assembly as you remove the final fasteners.
    Torque spec
    Linkage Pivot Nuts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  8. 8
    Remove linkage assembly mounting bolts
Remove the main mounting bolts securing the linkage assembly to the cowl area. There are typically 3-4 mounting bolts accessible once the covers are removed. Use a 10mm or 12mm socket as appropriate for your specific model year.
    Torque spec
    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  9. 9
    Extract wiper linkage assembly
Carefully maneuver the entire wiper linkage and motor assembly out of the cowl area. The assembly may need to be rotated or tilted to clear the firewall and cowl structures. Take care not to damage surrounding components or wiring during removal.
  10. 10
    Install new linkage assembly
Position the new wiper linkage and motor assembly into the cowl area, reversing the removal process. Ensure all pivot points align with their mounting locations before installing fasteners. Hand-tighten all mounting bolts first, then torque to specification starting with the main mounting bolts, followed by pivot nuts, then motor mounting bolts.

    Linkage Pivot Nuts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
    Motor Mounting Bolts10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Reconnect electrical and ground connections
Reconnect the ground cable and secure with the ground bolt, torquing to specification. Reconnect the wiper motor electrical connector, ensuring it clicks into place securely.
    Torque spec
    Ground Bolt13 Nm (10 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Reinstall cowl covers
Reinstall the cowl side covers and secure any screws to specification. Reinstall the main cowl top cover, pressing firmly on each clip location until fully seated. Verify all clips are secure.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  13. 13
    Install wiper arms
Position the wiper arms onto the pivot shafts according to your previously marked positions. The driver side arm should park approximately 1 inch from the cowl edge. Install the retaining nuts and tighten securely with a 14mm socket. Close the protective caps.

Reassembly

  1. Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten securely
  2. Perform window auto-up/down relearn procedure if necessary: fully lower each window, then fully raise and hold switch for 2 seconds
  3. Reset clock and radio presets as needed

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position and activate wipers through all speed settings to verify smooth operation
  • Check that wiper arms park in correct position and do not contact cowl or hood edges
  • Verify wiper arms clear windshield evenly across full sweep without binding or unusual noise
  • Test intermittent and variable speed functions for proper operation
  • Inspect all cowl covers for proper fitment and secure mounting
