Procedure to replace a single ignition coil on a 2015 Kia Forte 1.8L I4 engine, including removal and reinstallation with proper torque specifications.

Warnings

Allow engine to cool completely before beginning work to avoid burns from hot components
Do not disconnect ignition coil connectors with engine running as this can damage the coil or ECM
ℹ️Identify which cylinder requires coil replacement before starting work to minimize disassembly

Tools required

10mm socket and ratchetEssential
Torque wrenchEssential
Dielectric grease
Anti-seize compoundEssential
Spark plug socket (16mm)
Extension bar (6-inch)Essential

Parts

  • Ignition coil assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is cool to the touch
  2. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 3 minutes for system discharge
  3. Remove engine cover by pulling upward on cover clips
  4. Identify the cylinder position requiring coil replacement (cylinders numbered 1-4 from timing belt end)

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect ignition coil electrical connector
Press the release tab on the ignition coil connector and pull straight up to disconnect. Do not pull on the wires themselves.
  2. 2
    Remove ignition coil mounting bolt
Using a 10mm socket, remove the single bolt securing the ignition coil to the cylinder head. The bolt is located at the top of the coil assembly.
  3. 3
Extract ignition coil from cylinder head
Grasp the ignition coil firmly and pull straight upward with a slight twisting motion to break the seal. The coil boot sits deep in the spark plug well and may require moderate force to remove.
  4. 4
Inspect spark plug well and boot
Check the spark plug well for oil or moisture contamination. Inspect the old coil boot for cracks, carbon tracking, or oil saturation. If spark plug replacement is needed, remove it now using a spark plug socket.
  5. 5
    Install spark plug if replaced
If replacing the spark plug, apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads (avoiding the electrode). Thread by hand to prevent cross-threading, then torque to specification using a torque wrench.

  6. 6
    Prepare new ignition coil
Apply a thin coat of dielectric grease to the inside of the new coil boot. This aids in future removal and prevents moisture intrusion.
  7. 7
    Install new ignition coil
Align the coil with the spark plug well and push down firmly until the coil boot seats fully onto the spark plug insulator. The coil mounting hole should align with the cylinder head threaded hole.
  8. 8
Install and torque coil mounting bolt
Insert the ignition coil bolt and hand-tighten. Using a torque wrench, tighten the bolt to specification. Do not over-tighten as this can crack the coil housing.

    Ignition Coil Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  9. 9
    Reconnect electrical connector
Push the electrical connector onto the ignition coil until it clicks into place. Tug gently to verify it is fully seated and locked.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall engine cover by aligning clips and pressing down until all clips engage
  2. Reconnect negative battery cable
  3. Clear any stored diagnostic trouble codes using an OBD-II scanner if applicable

Verification

  • Start the engine and verify smooth idle with no misfires or rough running
  • Check for diagnostic trouble codes related to the replaced coil cylinder
  • Perform a test drive and monitor engine performance under acceleration
  • Verify no check engine light illumination after completing at least one drive cycle
