This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the instrument cluster on a 2014 Ram 2500 with 6.7L Cummins Diesel engine, including steering column shroud removal and electrical connector disconnection.
Warnings
⚠Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and may require relearning procedures for certain modules.
⚠The instrument cluster contains sensitive electronics. Handle carefully and avoid touching connector pins or circuit board components.
ℹ️Diesel-specific warning: The cluster controls glow plug indicator and exhaust brake functions. Verify proper operation after installation.

Parts
- Instrument cluster assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
- Allow vehicle to sit for at least 5 minutes to allow airbag system capacitors to discharge
- Disconnect negative battery terminal, then positive terminal
- Wait an additional 2 minutes after battery disconnection before beginning work
- Place a protective cover over the steering wheel to prevent scratches
Procedure
- 1Remove lower steering column shroudLocate and remove the Torx screws securing the lower steering column shroud. There are typically 2-3 screws on the underside of the shroud. Once screws are removed, gently pull the lower shroud away from the column and set aside.
- 2Remove upper steering column shroudWith the lower shroud removed, locate the fasteners on the upper steering column shroud. Remove the Torx screws and carefully separate the upper shroud from the column. You may need to tilt it forward and lift to clear the ignition switch and wiper/turn signal stalks. Set aside with lower shroud.
- 3Remove instrument cluster bezelUsing panel trim removal tools, carefully pry the instrument cluster bezel away from the dashboard. Start at the bottom corners and work your way around the perimeter. The bezel is held by plastic clips. Apply steady, even pressure to avoid breaking clips. Once all clips are released, pull bezel forward and set aside.⚠Work slowly with trim tools to avoid cracking the bezel or damaging the dashboard surface.
- 4Remove cluster mounting screwsWith the bezel removed, you will see 4 screws securing the instrument cluster to the dashboard carrier. Remove all 4 screws using appropriate Torx or socket driver. Keep screws organized for reinstallation.
- 5Pull cluster forwardCarefully pull the instrument cluster straight forward out of the dashboard opening approximately 3-4 inches. Support the cluster with one hand while accessing the rear connectors. Be mindful of the wiring harness length and do not pull excessively.⚠Do not allow the cluster to hang by its wiring harness as this can damage connectors or circuit boards.
- 6Label and disconnect electrical connectorsIdentify the electrical connectors on the rear of the cluster. There are typically 3-4 large connectors. Use masking tape and marker to label each connector position if desired. Press the release tabs on each connector and carefully pull them straight back off the cluster pins. For stubborn connectors, use needle nose pliers to depress the locking tabs while pulling.ℹ️Some connectors have secondary locking tabs that must be lifted before the main connector can be removed.
- 7Remove old instrument clusterWith all electrical connectors disconnected, completely remove the instrument cluster from the vehicle. Inspect the cluster for any obvious damage. Place the old cluster in a safe location away from the work area.
- 8Prepare new instrument clusterRemove the new or replacement instrument cluster from its packaging. Inspect all connector pins on the rear of the cluster for damage or bent pins. Verify that the cluster is the correct part for your vehicle by comparing it to the old unit.ℹ️New clusters may require programming or VIN configuration by a dealer or qualified technician with appropriate diagnostic equipment.
- 9Connect electrical harnesses to new clusterPosition the new cluster near the dashboard opening. Reconnect each electrical connector to its corresponding port on the cluster. Ensure each connector fully seats with an audible click and verify the locking tab engages. Gently tug on each connector to confirm proper connection. Reference your labels if you marked connector positions during removal.
- 10Install cluster into dashboardCarefully guide the new instrument cluster into the dashboard opening, ensuring no wires are pinched behind the cluster. Align the mounting holes with the dashboard carrier. Push the cluster flush against the mounting surface.
- 11Install cluster mounting screwsInstall all 4 cluster mounting screws by hand first to ensure proper thread engagement. Once all screws are started, tighten them in a cross pattern to ensure even pressure. Tighten to specification if your screws correspond to Cover Screws or Module Mounting Bolts from the torque spec list. If standard instrument cluster screws, tighten to 2-3 Nm (18-26 in-lb) or just snug - do not overtighten.
- 12Reinstall cluster bezelPosition the instrument cluster bezel over the cluster and align it with the dashboard. Starting at one side, press firmly around the entire perimeter to engage all retaining clips. You should hear and feel each clip snap into place. Verify the bezel is flush and seated properly all around.
- 13Reinstall steering column shroudsPosition the upper steering column shroud around the column, ensuring it clears the ignition switch and stalks. Install and hand-tighten the Torx screws. Position the lower shroud and align with upper shroud, then install its screws. Tighten all shroud screws snugly but do not overtighten plastic components.
- 14Reconnect batteryReconnect the positive battery terminal first, then the negative terminal. Tighten battery terminal bolts to specification.⚠Ensure terminals are clean and free of corrosion before reconnection. Do not overtighten as this can damage the battery posts.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Verify all trim pieces and shrouds are properly secured with no rattles
- Ensure no tools or parts were left in the dashboard area
- Check that all dashboard functions and switches operate normally
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine - all cluster warning lights should illuminate for bulb check, then extinguish after 2-3 seconds
- Start the engine and verify all gauges are functioning: speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, coolant temperature, and oil pressure
- Verify diesel-specific functions: glow plug indicator cycles properly during cold start, exhaust brake indicator operates if equipped
- Check that odometer displays correct mileage (if cluster was programmed) or displays dashes/error if programming is required
- Test all cluster-controlled warning indicators including check engine light, battery, brake system, and airbag lights
- Verify cluster dimmer control works properly with headlight switch
- Test trip computer functions and driver information display if equipped
- If any functions do not work or cluster displays error messages, verify all connectors are fully seated or check if dealer programming is required
