Replace a single TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) sensor on a 2024 Model 3 Long Range. The 2024 Model 3 uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) TPMS sensors mounted to the valve stem inside the wheel; replacement requires tire dismount and re-pairing via the vehicle touchscreen.

Warnings

⚠️Never lift a Model 3 on the battery pack or pinch welds. Use only the four designated jack pad locations with a Tesla-compatible puck — improper lifting can damage the HV battery pack and create a fire/electrocution hazard.
2024 Model 3 uses Bluetooth (BLE) TPMS sensors, NOT the older 433 MHz RF sensors used on early Model 3s. Installing the wrong sensor type will not pair and will trigger a persistent TPMS fault.
The Model 3 body is a steel/aluminum hybrid. Do not strike suspension or body components with a steel hammer; use a dead-blow if persuasion is needed.
ℹ️Sensors auto-pair while driving via BLE, but pairing can take up to 20 minutes of driving above ~15 mph. A bidirectional TPMS tool can pair them immediately.
Tesla recommends tire rotation every 6,250 miles. While the wheel is off, inspect tread depth and rotate if due.

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place in P, engage parking brake.
  2. Exit ALL doors with the key fob/phone key away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  3. Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery. On 2024 Model 3, the low-voltage battery is typically a lithium-ion unit; access location varies — refer to the architecture notes and Tesla Service Manual for the specific 2024 build.
  4. DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
  5. If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
  6. Enable Service Mode or Tow/Jack Mode via the touchscreen before lifting (prevents air suspension events on equipped vehicles and disables certain wake/drive logic). Note: 2024 Model 3 is coil-sprung only.
  7. Identify which corner has the failed sensor by reading the TPMS fault on the touchscreen (Controls → Service, or the tire pressure display).
  8. Loosen the lug nuts on the affected wheel slightly before lifting.

Procedure

  1. 1
    Lift the vehicle and remove the wheel
    Place the Tesla-approved jack pad at the designated lift point for the affected corner. Raise the vehicle and support with a jack stand rated for EV weight. Remove the lug nuts and lift the wheel/tire assembly off the hub. Note the original wheel position for rotation tracking.
    ⚠️Lifting on the battery pack underside or pinch welds will damage the HV pack. Use only the four factory jack points.

    Deflate the tire and break the bead
    Remove the valve cap and use a valve core tool to remove the valve core, fully deflating the tire. Move the wheel to a tire machine and break both beads, taking care not to scratch the wheel face — many 2024 Model 3 wheels have a painted/machined finish that marks easily.
    Use plastic or protected bead breaker shoes on alloy wheels. Aero covers (if equipped) must be removed before mounting on the machine.

    Dismount the tire from the wheel
    Mount the wheel on the tire machine. Lubricate the bead and dismount the upper bead first, taking care that the mount/dismount head does not contact the TPMS sensor mounted at the valve stem (typical 6 o'clock orientation when valve is at 12).
    Striking the TPMS sensor with the dismount head is the most common cause of damaging an otherwise-good adjacent sensor.

    Remove the old TPMS sensor
    From inside the wheel, unscrew the valve stem retaining nut and remove the old sensor and valve stem assembly through the valve hole. Inspect the valve hole for corrosion or burrs and clean as needed.

    Install the new TPMS sensor
    Install a new grommet/seal on the new sensor's valve stem. Feed the valve stem through the wheel's valve hole and hand-thread the retaining nut. Position the sensor flat against the inside of the drop center and tighten the retaining nut to the sensor manufacturer's specification (typically a low value, e.g., 4 Nm — refer to the sensor packaging or Tesla Service Manual; do NOT overtighten or the stem nipple will deform and leak).
    Torque to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual and the TPMS sensor manufacturer's spec. Overtightening crushes the seal and causes a slow leak.

    Mount and inflate the tire
    Lubricate the tire beads and mount the tire onto the wheel, observing any directional/outside markings. Seat the beads using a controlled inflation burst, then inflate to Tesla's door-jamb placard pressure (typically 42 psi cold for 2024 Model 3 Long Range — verify on the actual driver's door jamb sticker). Install a new valve core and cap.
    Never exceed 40 psi during bead seating with a non-cage setup. Stand clear during seating.

    Balance the wheel/tire assembly
    Balance the wheel on a balancer using the correct mounting cone for the Model 3's center bore. Apply stick-on weights to the inner barrel for the Aero/Photon style wheels (cosmetic) or as the wheel design dictates. Target ≤ 0.25 oz residual imbalance.

    Reinstall the wheel
    Clean the hub mating surface (corrosion here causes lug-nut loosening on EVs due to high regen torque). Lift the wheel onto the hub, hand-thread all lug nuts, then snug in a star pattern. Lower the vehicle until the tire just touches the ground and final-torque the lug nuts in a star pattern.
    Tesla strongly cautions against using impact wrenches for final torque on wheels. Use a calibrated torque wrench.

Reassembly

  1. Lower the vehicle fully off the jack stands.
  2. Reconnect the 12V low-voltage battery.
  3. Close the hood/access panel and exit Service/Tow Mode.
  4. Wake the vehicle and confirm there are no new fault messages on the touchscreen.

Verification

  • On the touchscreen, open the tire pressure display and confirm all four pressures eventually populate. With a BLE sensor on 2024 Model 3, the new sensor may take up to ~20 minutes of driving above approximately 15 mph to auto-pair and report.
  • Confirm the TPMS warning light/message clears after the relearn period. If it persists beyond a 30-minute drive, use a bidirectional TPMS tool to pair the sensor ID, or re-check that the sensor is the correct BLE type for 2024 Model 3.
  • Re-check lug nut torque after 50 miles of driving — Tesla specifically calls this out due to high regen-braking torque seating the wheel against the hub.
  • Verify no slow leak at the new valve stem with soapy water around the stem and bead.
  • While the wheel was off, note current tread depth and odometer for the next tire rotation interval (Tesla recommends every 6,250 mi).
