Replace the brake master cylinder on a 2024 Tesla Model S Plaid. This is a hydraulic-only job (the iBooster/HV-adjacent electronics are not serviced here), but extreme care is needed around the brake-by-wire system and aluminum body components.
Warnings
⚠️DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce any orange high-voltage cable. If you encounter HV components or are unsure if a system is de-energized, STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
⚠️Tesla Model S Plaid uses a brake-by-wire / electro-hydraulic boost system. Improper bleeding or air in the system can cause partial or total brake failure. A Tesla-capable scan tool may be required to complete an automated bleed routine after service.
⚠Brake fluid will damage paint and aluminum body panels instantly. Cover fenders and the front trunk area with absorbent covers and rinse any spills immediately with water.
⚠Body panels are stamped aluminum — do not pry against or strike them. Use plastic trim tools only.
⚠Verify correct DOT specification by VIN before adding fluid. Mixing DOT 3 and DOT 4/5.1 incorrectly, or using DOT 5 silicone, will damage the system.
ℹ️Tesla recommends brake fluid replacement every 2 years regardless of mileage — perform a full system flush while the master cylinder is open.

Preparation
- Park on level ground, place the vehicle in P, and engage the parking brake.
- Exit ALL doors with the key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
- Open the frunk and disconnect the 12V (or 16V lithium, if equipped — located under the rear seat on some 2021+ Plaid units) low-voltage battery negative terminal. For frunk-located batteries, remove the nose cowl panel to access.
- DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
- If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
- Cover the front fenders, frunk liner, and any painted aluminum surfaces near the brake reservoir with absorbent fender covers.
- Confirm the correct brake fluid DOT rating for this VIN before opening any sealed container.
- Have a Tesla-capable diagnostic tool ready — the brake-by-wire system typically requires a scan-tool-initiated bleed sequence to fully purge the booster/ABS modulator.
Procedure
- 1Access the master cylinderWith the 12V battery disconnected, remove the cowl/upper cover panels and any air intake ducting required to expose the brake master cylinder and reservoir at the firewall. Use plastic trim tools — do not pry against aluminum body panels.
- 2Evacuate brake fluid from the reservoirUsing a clean fluid transfer pump or syringe dedicated to brake fluid, remove as much fluid as possible from the master cylinder reservoir. Dispose of used fluid properly. Do not allow fluid to drip onto paint or aluminum.⚠Brake fluid is corrosive to paint and skin. Wear gloves and eye protection.
- 3Disconnect electrical connectorsIdentify and disconnect any electrical connectors on the master cylinder/reservoir assembly (typically a fluid-level sensor, and on brake-by-wire systems, additional pressure/position sensors). Release locking tabs gently — connectors become brittle. Do not pull on wiring.
- 4Disconnect hydraulic linesPlace a catch pan beneath the master cylinder. Using a line wrench (flare nut wrench) of the correct size, carefully loosen and disconnect the brake lines from the master cylinder. Cap each line immediately to prevent contamination and minimize fluid loss. Once seated, torque each fitting to the OEM specification using a line wrench. - 9Reconnect electrical connectorsReconnect the fluid-level sensor and any other electrical connectors removed earlier. Confirm each connector clicks fully home and the locking tab is engaged.
- 10Fill reservoir with fresh brake fluidFill the reservoir to the MAX line with fresh, sealed brake fluid of the correct DOT rating (verified by VIN). Install the reservoir cap hand-tight only.⚠Never reuse brake fluid or use fluid from a previously opened container — it absorbs moisture and will lower boiling point.
- 11Bleed the entire brake systemReconnect the 12V battery. Power the vehicle on (without driving). Using a Tesla-capable diagnostic tool, initiate the service bleed routine if available — the brake-by-wire booster and ABS modulator on Plaid contain internal circuits that cannot be purged by manual pedal-pumping alone. Then perform a manual or pressure bleed at each caliper in the manufacturer-specified sequence until clean, bubble-free fluid flows. Torque each bleeder screw on closing.⚠️If the pedal remains spongy or a brake warning persists, DO NOT drive the vehicle. Trapped air in the booster requires a scan-tool bleed routine.
Reassembly
- Top off the reservoir to the MAX line with fresh fluid; install the reservoir cap hand-tight.
- Reinstall any cowl/intake covers and trim removed for access.
- Confirm the 12V (or 16V) battery is reconnected and the negative terminal is torqued to OEM specification.
- Wipe down all surfaces with water to neutralize any brake fluid residue, then dry.
- Clear any stored brake-system DTCs with a Tesla-capable scan tool.
Verification
- With the vehicle ON and stationary, press the brake pedal firmly several times — pedal must feel firm and consistent, not spongy or sinking.
- Confirm no brake-system warning lights or messages on the center display (no ABS, ESC, traction, or 'Brake System Needs Service' alerts).
- Inspect all hydraulic fittings and the master cylinder mounting flange for any sign of weeping fluid after pedal application.
- Perform a low-speed function test in a safe, empty area: confirm normal pedal feel, straight-line stopping, and proper regen handoff to friction braking.
- At higher speed (in a safe location), perform a moderate ABS-engagement stop to confirm the ABS modulator and booster respond normally.
- Recheck reservoir level after the test drive and top off if needed.
