Replace the windshield washer fluid pump on a 2024 Model S Plaid. The pump is mounted to the side of the washer reservoir, accessible from the front wheel well after removing the wheel liner.

Warnings

⚠️Do not touch or cut any orange high-voltage cable. If you encounter one, stop work immediately.
Aluminum body panels — do not strike or pry aggressively against body surfaces. Use plastic trim tools only.
Washer fluid will drain from the reservoir port when the pump is removed. Have a drain pan ready or siphon the reservoir first.
ℹ️The 2024 Model S Plaid uses a 16V lithium low-voltage battery located under the rear seat — not the frunk. Verify location before disconnecting.

Parts

  • Windshield washer pump (OEM or OE-equivalent for Model S 2021+) × 1 — manufacturer-specified washer pump for 2021+ Model S refresh
  • Pump grommet/seal (often supplied with pump) × 1 — OEM washer pump grommet

Fluids

  • Windshield Washer Fluid — 3.5 qt

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place in P, engage parking brake.
  2. Exit ALL doors with the key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  3. Disconnect the low-voltage battery. On 2024 Model S Plaid this is typically a 16V lithium unit located under the rear seat — verify before disconnecting and torque terminals on reassembly to the verified Battery Terminal Bolts spec.
  4. DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
  5. If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
  6. Optionally, run the washer system briefly with the supply line disconnected at the pump to drain the reservoir into a pan, OR siphon fluid from the filler neck to minimize spillage.
  7. Confirm correct replacement pump on hand before disassembly.

Procedure

  1. 1
Raise vehicle and remove front wheel
Raise the front of the vehicle using the manufacturer-specified jacking points (use puck adapters to protect the battery pack edge). Support on jack stands. Remove the front wheel on the side where the washer reservoir is located (typically passenger side on Model S, but verify visually).
Use Tesla-approved jack pads at the designated lift points. Lifting on the battery pack or pinch welds can damage the HV pack enclosure.
  2. 2
    Remove front wheel arch liner
Remove the plastic push-pin retainers and Torx fasteners securing the front wheel arch liner. Pull the liner back to expose the washer reservoir and pump on the inboard side of the wheel well.
  3. 3
    Locate the washer pump
Identify the washer pump installed in the side of the reservoir bottle. It will have one or two electrical connectors and one or more fluid supply lines (front washer, and on this trim possibly headlight/sensor washers).
  4. 4
    Disconnect electrical connector
Release the locking tab and disconnect the electrical connector from the washer pump. Inspect the pins for corrosion or damage.
  5. 5
    Disconnect washer hose(s)
Gently pull the washer supply hose(s) off the pump barb(s). Position the drain pan beneath the pump — fluid in the lines and reservoir will spill out.
If the vehicle is equipped with multiple washer circuits (e.g., headlight/camera washer), label hoses before removal to ensure correct reinstallation.
  6. 6
Remove the pump from the reservoir
Grasp the pump body and pull straight outward with steady force to extract it from the rubber grommet seated in the reservoir wall. Allow remaining fluid to drain into the pan. Inspect the grommet — replace if cracked, hardened, or distorted.
Do not pry against the reservoir — the plastic can crack. Pull the pump straight out.
  7. 7
    Install new pump
Lubricate the new grommet lightly with clean washer fluid (no petroleum products). Seat the grommet in the reservoir if it was removed. Press the new pump straight into the grommet until fully seated. Verify it is square and not cocked in the bore.
ℹ️Do NOT use silicone grease, oil, or soap on the grommet — these can degrade rubber or contaminate the system. Use only washer fluid.
  8. 8
    Reconnect hoses and electrical connector
Reattach the washer hose(s) to the correct pump barb(s), pushing fully onto the fitting. Reconnect the electrical connector until the lock tab clicks. Verify all connections are secure.
  9. 9
    Refill washer reservoir
Refill the washer reservoir with fresh windshield washer fluid through the frunk filler neck. Capacity is approximately 3.5 quarts.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall the front wheel arch liner with all push-pin retainers and Torx fasteners.
  2. Reinstall the front wheel. Torque lug nuts to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual (commonly 175 N·m / 129 lb-ft on Model S, but verify).
  3. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
  4. Reconnect the low-voltage battery. Torque terminal hardware per Battery Terminal Bolts spec.
  5. Close the frunk and confirm reservoir cap is secure.

Verification

  • Power the vehicle on (driver in seat, brake pressed) and allow systems to wake.
  • Activate the windshield washers from the steering wheel control. Confirm strong, even spray from both nozzles.
  • If equipped with camera/sensor washers, verify those circuits operate as expected.
  • Inspect the wheel well area and pump body for any leaks after several activations.
  • Check the touchscreen for any service alerts related to the washer system; clear if appropriate.
  • Note: This job is not on a Tesla scheduled service interval, but while the wheel is off it is a good opportunity to inspect tire wear (Tesla recommends rotation every 6,250 mi) and verify brake fluid age (replace every 2 years per Tesla recommendation).
