Warnings

Parts

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place in P, engage parking brake.
  2. Before powering down: enter the touchscreen Service Menu and place the parking brake in Service Mode (Brake Service Mode) so the EPB actuator retracts fully. Confirm retraction before proceeding.
  3. Exit ALL doors with the key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  4. Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery (located behind/under trim in the rear area on 2024 Model Y — refer to architecture notes). Isolate the negative terminal to prevent reconnection.

Procedure

    Confirm actuator is in service position
    Visually verify the EPB actuator on the rear caliper is fully retracted (Service Mode was engaged before 12V disconnect). If it is not retracted and the 12V is already disconnected, you must reconnect the 12V and re-enter Service Mode — do not attempt to remove a clamped actuator.

    Locate the parking brake actuator
    On the 2024 Model Y, the EPB actuator is mounted to the rear of each rear brake caliper, secured by a small number of fasteners and connected by an electrical harness with a locking connector.

    Disconnect the actuator electrical connector
    Release the connector lock tab and unplug the EPB actuator harness. Inspect the connector pins and seal for corrosion. Position the harness aside so it is not strained during actuator removal.
    Do not pry the connector with metal tools — the locking tabs are brittle plastic and the harness is not separately serviceable.

    Pull the actuator straight out of the caliper. It should release without force if it was retracted correctly. Inspect the splined drive shaft and the caliper bore for the spindle nut position. If the actuator is seized or the spindle nut is not retracted, STOP — forcing it will damage the caliper.
    Do not rotate the caliper spindle nut by hand to 'help' — this can extend the piston and cause hydraulic issues.

    Inspect and clean the mating surface
    Clean the actuator mounting face on the caliper with brake cleaner and a lint-free cloth. Inspect for cracks or corrosion. Verify the new actuator's seal/O-ring is in place and lightly lubricated per the manufacturer-specified seal lubricant.

    Install the new actuator
    Align the new actuator drive splines with the caliper spindle and seat the actuator squarely against the caliper. The actuator should seat fully by hand with no gap before fasteners are installed.
    If the actuator will not seat flush, do NOT pull it down with the bolts — remove and re-align. Bolting down a misaligned actuator will crack the housing.

    Torque the actuator mounting fasteners
    Apply medium-strength threadlocker to the mounting fasteners if specified by the new actuator's instructions. Install and torque to specification in a cross pattern.

    Reconnect the electrical harness
    Reconnect the EPB actuator connector and verify the locking tab is fully engaged. Route the harness back into its original retainers — it must not contact the rotor, suspension arms, or exhaust-side heat shielding.

    Reinstall the wheel
    Reinstall the rear wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts. Lower the vehicle until the tire just contacts the ground, then final-torque in a star pattern.

Reassembly

  1. Lower the vehicle fully to the ground.
  2. Reconnect the 12V low-voltage battery negative terminal and reinstall any trim removed for access.
  3. Power on the vehicle (do not drive yet). Allow systems to fully boot — expect temporary EPB, ABS, and traction control warnings on the cluster/touchscreen.
  4. Exit Brake Service Mode via the touchscreen Service Menu. The EPB will self-calibrate by extending and retracting the actuator. Listen for normal operation on both rear corners.
  5. Cycle the parking brake several times via the touchscreen / shifter (Park/Drive transitions) to confirm engagement and release.

Verification

  • Confirm no EPB, ABS, or stability control warnings remain on the touchscreen after calibration completes.
  • With the vehicle on level ground, engage the parking brake and attempt to creep forward in Drive at low throttle — the vehicle should hold firmly.
  • On a safe, gentle incline, place in Neutral and apply the EPB only — vehicle must hold without rolling.
  • Inspect the new actuator and harness for clearance to the rotor and suspension at full droop and at ride height.
  • Recheck wheel lug torque after the first 50 miles in a star pattern (Tesla recommendation due to alloy wheel seating).
