Warnings
⚠️The steering wheel airbag and clockspring are nearby. Do NOT remove the airbag or steering wheel for this job — the stalk can be replaced without disturbing either. Accidental airbag deployment can cause serious injury.
⚠On 2024 Model Y, confirm the vehicle actually has a turn signal stalk before ordering parts. Some 2024 production runs and refresh variants moved turn signals to capacitive steering wheel buttons.
⚠The 12V battery in the 2024 Model Y is located under the rear seat / load floor area. Disconnect it before working near steering column wiring to avoid shorts and to allow airbag system capacitors to discharge.
ℹ️After 12V reconnection, the vehicle may show transient errors (TPMS, traction control, autopilot calibration). Most clear after a short drive.

- Left steering column stalk assembly (turn signal/wiper switch) × 1 — Tesla Model 3/Y multifunction stalk — verify by VIN
Preparation
- Park on level ground, place in P, engage parking brake.
- Exit ALL doors with the key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
- Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery (located behind/under the rear seat or load floor — refer to your specific 2024 build). Wait an additional 2 minutes after disconnect for airbag system capacitors to bleed down before working near the steering column.
- DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
- If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
- Confirm by VIN/build that this vehicle uses a physical stalk and order the correct left-side multifunction stalk assembly.
- Set the steering wheel to the fully lowered and fully extended position to provide working clearance, then turn the column tilt lock manually if needed (with 12V disconnected, electric tilt is unavailable — adjust BEFORE disconnecting 12V).
- Center the steering wheel and mark its straight-ahead position with tape so the clockspring is not disturbed during the procedure.
Procedure
- 1Pre-position steering columnBEFORE disconnecting the 12V battery, use the screen controls to lower and extend the steering column to its maximum service position. Once 12V is disconnected, the electric tilt/telescope motor will not function. Then perform the safety preamble and disconnect the 12V battery.
- 2Confirm 12V is deadPress the brake pedal and verify no instrument cluster activity, no center display wake, and no interior lighting. Wait at least 2 minutes after disconnect before proceeding.⚠Do not skip this verification — live 12V near the clockspring connector risks airbag squib activation.
- 3Remove the lower steering column shroudUsing a plastic trim tool, release the clips along the seam of the upper and lower steering column covers. Locate and remove the retaining screws on the underside of the lower shroud (typically Torx). - 4Remove the upper steering column shroudWith the lower shroud out, lift the upper shroud free of its clips. Take care around the steering wheel hub — do not pry against the clockspring or airbag wiring.Torque specSteering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
- 5Identify the left stalk and its harness connectorWith both shrouds removed, the left (turn signal/wiper) stalk is visible mounted to the clockspring/switch module on the steering column. Trace the stalk's harness pigtail to its connector on the column-mounted switch body.ℹ️Do not pull on the wires — release the connector at its lock tab only.
- 6Disconnect the stalk electrical connectorDepress the connector's locking tab and gently separate the stalk pigtail from the column switch module. Inspect the connector for corrosion or bent pins.
- 7Remove the stalk mounting screwsThe stalk is retained to the column switch housing by small machine screws (typically two). Support the stalk with one hand while removing the screws so it does not fall and stress the harness.
- 8Remove the failed stalkSlide the stalk straight out of its mounting boss. Do not rotate or pry against the clockspring face.⚠Do not rotate the steering wheel while the stalk and shrouds are removed — this can de-center the clockspring and damage it on reassembly.
- 9Compare old and new partsVerify the replacement stalk's connector pinout, mounting boss shape, and lever style match the removed unit. 2024 Model Y stalks differ between early and late production — a mismatch will cause faults.
- 10Install the new stalkInsert the new stalk into the mounting boss until fully seated, then install the mounting screws and torque them to specification.⚠These screws are small and thread into plastic/light alloy. - 11Reconnect the stalk harnessMate the connector until the locking tab clicks fully home. Tug-test gently to confirm engagement.
Reassembly
- Reinstall the upper steering column shroud, ensuring all clips seat fully.
- Reinstall the lower steering column shroud and any retaining screws. Torque shroud screws to the steering column cover specification.
- Verify the steering wheel has not been rotated off-center during the procedure.
- Reinstall and reconnect the 12V low-voltage battery. Torque the battery terminal hardware to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual.
- Allow the vehicle to fully wake (touch brake pedal, allow center display to boot — this can take 30-60 seconds after 12V reconnect).
Verification
- Confirm no warning messages on the center display related to steering, airbag/SRS, or vehicle systems. If an SRS/airbag warning persists, STOP driving and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
- Test left turn signal (single tap and full-detent), right turn signal, lane-change tap function, and high-beam flash/pull.
- Test wiper functions if integrated into the same stalk: intermittent, low, high, and washer spray.
- Verify Autopilot/Autosteer engagement still functions correctly via stalk (if applicable to your build) — engage on a safe road and confirm no faults.
- Drive a short distance to allow any transient TPMS/traction/Autopilot calibration messages from the 12V disconnect to clear.
- Note: This job is not on a scheduled service interval, but while the column shrouds were off, this is a good time to confirm your cabin air filter (2-year interval) and brake fluid (2-year interval) services are current.
