Warnings

Preparation
- Park on level ground, place in P, engage parking brake.
- Exit ALL doors with the key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
- Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery (located behind/under the rear seat area on Model Y — refer to owner documentation for exact access).
- DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
- If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
- Disable Sentry Mode and place the vehicle in Tow/Transport Mode via the touchscreen if it must be moved or rolled before lifting.
- Loosen wheel lug nuts while the wheel is still on the ground.
- Lift the vehicle at the manufacturer-specified jack point with a puck adapter and support on jack stands.
- Remove the wheel and confirm which corner's bracket is being replaced (front or rear — torque differs).
Procedure
- 1Inspect and documentPhotograph the caliper, bracket, hose routing, and any wear sensor or ABS wiring clipped to the bracket/knuckle area. Note pad orientation and any anti-rattle clips.
- 2Relieve caliper preloadUsing a large C-clamp or piston compressor, gently push the caliper piston(s) back slightly to free the pads from the rotor. On rear calipers with integrated electric parking brake (EPB), the EPB must be put into service mode via the touchscreen (Service menu → Brakes) before retracting the piston, otherwise the EPB actuator can be damaged.⚠Do not retract a rear caliper piston without first placing the EPB in service/caliper mode.

Reassembly
- Reinstall the wheel; hand-thread all lug nuts before applying any torque.
- Lower the vehicle until the tire just contacts the ground, then torque lug nuts to 140 Nm (103 lb-ft) in a star pattern.
- Fully lower the vehicle and remove jack stands.
- Reconnect the 12V low-voltage battery and reinstall any covers/trim removed for access.
- Wake the vehicle, clear any brake-related alerts, and confirm EPB is operational (rear job).
- If the hydraulic hose was disconnected at any point, bleed the brake system per Tesla's sequence and top off with DOT 3 brake fluid; new copper washers required at any banjo fitting.
Verification
- With the vehicle stationary and awake, pump the brake pedal — it should be firm within 1–2 strokes with no sponginess.
- Confirm no brake, ABS, or EPB warnings on the touchscreen.
- At low speed (5–10 mph) in an empty area, perform several gentle stops to seat the pads against the rotor; listen for scraping or uneven drag.
- Recheck the wheel for free rotation when lifted (slight pad contact is normal; binding is not).
- After a short test drive, re-inspect the bracket bolts and slide pin bolts visually for any movement or fluid weeping; re-verify lug nut torque after ~50 miles.
- Note: Tesla recommends brake fluid replacement every 2 years regardless of mileage — log this service date if the system was opened or fluid was topped off.
