Removal and reinstallation of a front or rear interior door panel (door card) on a 2024 Model Y. The Model Y uses a combination of hidden screws behind the grab handle trim, perimeter clips, and electrical connectors at the switch pack and tweeter.

Warnings

⚠️The door contains the side-impact airbag wiring and pyrotechnic seatbelt pretensioner circuits routed nearby. Disconnect the 12V battery and wait at least 2 minutes before disconnecting any yellow airbag-related connector.
Model Y door cards use one-time-use style push-pin clips that frequently stay in the door shell rather than the panel. Inspect after removal and transfer/replace any that pulled out of the panel before reinstalling.
Do not pry against the painted door frame with metal tools — the Model Y has thin paint on aluminum/steel hybrid door structures and will mark easily. Use nylon trim tools only.
ℹ️Pull the panel straight outward (perpendicular to the door skin) when releasing clips. Pulling at an angle snaps the plastic clip towers on the back of the panel — these are not separately serviceable.

Tools required

Plastic trim removal tool set (nylon, wedge and hook style)Essential

T25 Torx driver
Small flat-blade pick for connector locksEssential
Painter's tape (to protect paint at window belt line)
Microfiber blanket or moving pad (to lay panel face-down)
Inch-pound torque screwdriver (0–5 Nm range)Essential

Parts

  • Replacement door panel trim clips (push-pin retainers) × 8 — Tesla-spec door card retainer clips — replace any that come out of the door rather than the panel
  • Door panel (if replacing) × 1 — Front or rear, LH or RH, color/trim-matched to VIN

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, shift to P, and engage the parking brake from the touchscreen.
  2. Exit all doors with the key fob/phone key carried at least 10 feet away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for low-voltage systems to settle before opening connectors.
  3. Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery. On 2024 Model Y the 12V (lithium-ion) battery is accessed under the front trunk (frunk) tub — remove the frunk liner and disconnect the negative terminal first. Note: disconnecting 12V is required because this job involves unplugging the airbag-adjacent door harness and the window switch pack.
  4. Do NOT touch, cut, or pierce any orange cable. None should be present in the door, but if anything orange is encountered, STOP.
  5. Lower the window approximately 2 inches before disconnecting 12V — this gives clearance to access the upper belt-line clips and prevents the frameless glass from binding the seal.
  6. Open the door fully and support it. Lay a moving pad or microfiber blanket on a clean bench to receive the panel face-down once removed.
  7. If diagnosing a rattle or window/switch fault before replacement: confirm the issue is the panel itself and not the regulator, switch pack, or speaker. Replacing the panel will not fix a window regulator failure or a dead tweeter.

Procedure

  1. 1
Release the interior door pull/grab handle trim
At the front edge of the interior pull handle (the long horizontal pull), insert a nylon trim wedge into the seam and gently pry the trim cover upward/outward. It is retained by clips along its length. Once the trim cover is released, lift it straight off to expose the fasteners underneath.
  2. 2
Remove the hidden door panel screws
With the pull-handle trim removed, locate the screws securing the panel to the door shell behind it. Remove these screws with a T20 driver. Keep them organized — they thread into plastic bosses and must not be cross-threaded on reinstall.

    Door Panel Screws2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
  3. 3
Release the lower and rear perimeter clips
Starting at the lower rear corner of the door panel, insert a wide nylon trim wedge between the panel and the door shell. Pull the panel straight outward (away from the door skin) in firm, even tugs to release the push-pin retainers. Work across the bottom edge, then up the rear (latch-side) edge, then up the front (hinge-side) edge. Do NOT yet pull the top edge away from the belt line.
If a clip refuses to release, stop and verify you have removed all hidden screws. Forcing it will tear the clip tower out of the panel backing.
  4. 4
Lift the panel up and off the belt line
Once all perimeter clips are released, lift the door panel straight upward approximately 1–2 inches to disengage the top lip from the inner belt-line weatherstrip channel. The panel will now hang on its harnesses only.
  5. 5
    Disconnect the window/lock switch pack
Tilt the top of the panel outward to access the back side. Locate the master switch pack connector (driver's door has the multi-window switch; passenger doors have a single window switch). Press the connector's release tab and pull straight off. Do not pull on the wires.
    Torque spec
    Connector Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
  6. 6
Disconnect the tweeter / mid-range speaker connector
Locate the small two-pin connector feeding the tweeter mounted in the front upper corner of the panel (or, on the rear doors, the mid-range driver). Squeeze the latch and disconnect.
  7. 7
Disconnect the interior door release / courtesy lamp harness
Locate the connector for the electronic door release button assembly and the puddle/courtesy LED at the bottom of the panel. Release each latch and disconnect. Note routing — these harnesses are clipped to the back of the panel in two locations; release the harness retainer clips so the panel comes free without tugging the wiring.
On Model Y the interior door release is electronic (with a mechanical backup cable on the front doors only). Do not damage the release cable end or its plastic retainer — it is a friction-fit on a barrel anchor.
  8. 8
Disconnect the mechanical backup release cable (front doors only)
On front doors, locate the white/clear plastic mechanical override cable. Rotate the cable end out of its anchor on the panel and pop the cable barrel out of its retainer. Rear doors do not have this cable.
  9. 9
Remove the panel from the vehicle
With all connectors and the backup cable (front doors) released, lift the door panel away from the door and place it face-down on the padded bench.
  10. 10
    Inspect clips and vapor barrier
Inspect the back of the door panel: count the clip towers and confirm a clip is present in each. Any clip that stayed behind in the door shell must be pried out of the shell with a trim tool and either re-seated in the panel or replaced. Inspect the door's plastic vapor/acoustic barrier — if it was disturbed, re-seal with butyl tape before reinstalling. A torn or unsealed vapor barrier will cause water intrusion and wind noise.
Replace any clip that is cracked, deformed, or has a stretched center pin. Reusing damaged clips is the #1 cause of door panel rattles on Model Y.

Reassembly

  1. Confirm all push-pin clips are seated in the panel (not in the door shell) and are undamaged. Replace as needed.
  2. If the vapor barrier was lifted, re-seal its perimeter with fresh butyl tape — do not reuse old butyl that has lost tack.
  3. Reconnect, in order: mechanical backup release cable (front doors only) into its anchor, courtesy lamp connector, electronic door release connector, tweeter/speaker connector, and finally the window/lock switch pack. Verify each connector clicks and locks.
  4. Re-seat any harness retainers into their clips on the back of the panel so wires are not pinched between panel and door shell.
  5. Hook the top lip of the panel into the inner belt-line channel first, then align the perimeter clips to their holes in the door shell.
  6. Press firmly with a flat palm directly over each clip location (not in the middle of the panel) until each clip seats with an audible click. Work bottom edge, then sides.
  7. Reinstall the hidden screws behind the pull handle trim and torque to the Door Panel Screws spec. Do not over-tighten — the bosses are plastic.
  8. Reinstall the pull-handle trim cover by aligning its clips and pressing firmly along its length until fully seated and flush.
  9. Reconnect the 12V battery negative terminal in the frunk and reinstall the frunk liner.

Verification

  • With the 12V reconnected, sit in the driver's seat with the door closed and cycle the window fully up and down using the in-door switch. Confirm one-touch auto-up/down works and the window indexes correctly into the seal (frameless glass drops slightly when the door opens).
  • Test the window switch for every door from the driver's master switch pack (driver door panel only).
  • Test the electronic door release button — door should unlatch with a soft click. Then test the mechanical backup release lever (front doors) — door should also unlatch mechanically.
  • Test the door lock from inside and confirm the courtesy/puddle LED illuminates when the door is opened.
  • Play audio through the door's tweeter/speaker and confirm no buzz or dead channel.
  • Close the door and run a hand around the panel perimeter — there should be no gaps or proud edges, and no rattle when tapping the panel.
  • Road test over a rough surface and listen for rattles, especially from the bottom-front clip area which is the most common Model Y reassembly miss.
  • Confirm no airbag, seatbelt, or door-ajar warnings are present on the touchscreen after the 12V reconnect.
