Replacement of the left-hand multifunction stalk (turn signal/wiper switch) on a 2024 Model Y. Note: 2024 Model Y vehicles built after the Highland-style refresh on Model 3 may have different stalk configurations; verify your vehicle still has a traditional turn signal stalk before ordering parts.

Warnings

⚠️The driver airbag is mounted in the steering wheel directly adjacent to your work area. Do NOT pry on the steering wheel, do NOT disconnect or probe any yellow-jacketed SRS connectors, and ensure the 12V battery has been disconnected with a 2-minute wait before working near the column.
Tesla steering column shrouds are thin plastic with hidden clips. Use plastic trim tools only — metal tools will crack the shroud and leave permanent marks.
The stalk connector uses a fine-pitch locking tab. Release the lock fully before pulling — forcing it will break the connector body and require harness repair.

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place in P, engage parking brake.
  2. Exit ALL doors with the key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  3. Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery. On 2024 Model Y the 12V (lithium-ion) battery is accessed under the rear passenger area trim — refer to Tesla Service Manual for the exact access point on your build.
  4. DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
  5. If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
  6. Center the steering wheel and lock it in place (wheel straight, vehicle in P with 12V disconnected) so the clockspring/SRS coil is not rotated during service.
  7. Tilt and telescope the steering column to its fully extended/down position via the touchscreen BEFORE disconnecting 12V — this gives maximum working clearance.
  8. Place a clean shop towel over the upper steering column / instrument cluster area to prevent dropped fasteners from falling into the dash.

Procedure

    Remove the lower steering column shroud
    Locate the two retaining screws on the underside of the lower column shroud (typically T20 Torx). Remove them. Gently release the lower shroud from the upper shroud at the seam using a plastic trim tool, working around the perimeter. Lower the shroud away from the column.

    Remove the upper steering column shroud
    With the lower shroud removed, the upper shroud will release upward. Lift it carefully off the column. Note the routing of any small wire clips for the tilt/telescope mechanism so they can be reseated on reinstall.
    Do NOT pry against the instrument cluster bezel or the steering wheel hub — both can scratch easily.

    Identify the left multifunction stalk assembly
    With shrouds off, you will see the clockspring (SRS) housing in the center, with the right (gear/Autopilot) stalk and left (turn signal/wipers) stalk mounted to a switch carrier on either side. Identify the LEFT stalk only. Do not disturb the right stalk, the clockspring, or any yellow SRS connector.
    ⚠️The yellow connector is the SRS (airbag) circuit. Do not unplug, probe, or back-pin it.

    Disconnect the stalk electrical connector
    Locate the connector at the inboard end (column side) of the left stalk. Depress the locking tab fully and pull the connector straight off — do not rock it side-to-side. Inspect the pins for corrosion or damage.

    Release the stalk from the switch carrier
    The stalk is retained to the carrier either by a small retaining screw or by an integrated locking tab (varies by build). If a screw is present, remove it. If a tab is present, depress it and slide the stalk straight out of its dovetail in the carrier. Do not pry on the stalk body.
    Pull the stalk straight out along its mounting axis. Twisting can break the internal indexing pin and damage the carrier — which is NOT serviced separately on most builds.

    Compare old and new stalk
    Place old and new stalks side by side. Verify identical connector keying, pin count, and physical mounting interface. 2024 Model Y running production changes occurred — a mismatch here means the wrong part was ordered. Do not force-fit.

    Install the new stalk into the carrier
    Align the new stalk to the dovetail/locator on the switch carrier and slide it straight in until the locking tab clicks or the screw hole aligns. If equipped with a retaining screw, install and torque it.

    Reconnect the electrical connector
    Push the connector straight onto the stalk pins until the locking tab snaps fully home. Tug lightly to confirm engagement. A partially seated connector is the most common cause of intermittent turn signal faults after this repair.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall the upper steering column shroud, seating its rear edge against the cluster bezel without pinching any wires.
  2. Reinstall the lower steering column shroud, ensuring all perimeter clips engage before installing fasteners.
  3. Install the lower shroud screws and torque to the steering column cover specification.
  4. Remove the shop towel from the cluster area and verify no fasteners remain loose in the footwell.
  5. Reconnect the 12V low-voltage battery, terminal bolts torqued to the verified battery terminal spec.
  6. Close the 12V access cover and reinstall any rear seat / trim panels disturbed for battery access.

Verification

  • Insert key card / approach with phone key, sit in driver seat, press brake to wake the vehicle.
  • Allow the instrument display to fully boot — confirm no SRS/airbag warning, no 'Steering assist reduced' warning, and no general vehicle fault icons.
  • Test left turn signal (full and lane-change tap), right turn signal (full and lane-change tap), high-beam flash (pull toward driver), high-beam latch (push away).
  • Test all wiper functions controlled by the stalk on this build (single wipe, washer spray, any speed positions if equipped).
  • If equipped, test Autopilot engagement via the stalk (double-pull) on a safe road — confirm engagement and disengagement work cleanly.
  • Visually confirm the steering column shrouds sit flush with no gap at the seam and no rattle when the column is tilted/telescoped through its full range.
  • Note: while the column is apart is a good time to confirm cabin air filter age — Tesla recommends replacement every 2 years, though that is a separate job.
